This is exactly why, despite misgivings, I supported the Axiom-4 mission. Just get them to space as early as possible, gather some zero-g experience, and space miles. No point in spending crores on their training while they stay grounded due to the unavailability of the crew module. Ideally, the training should have begun when the fabrication of the crew module was in the final stages. It doesn't look like the training of a second batch of astronauts will commence anytime soon.

I agree with ISRO on this, all the vyomonauts we have selected are of apex fitness levels. A year or two won't mean much in the larger scheme of things considering shuks has also completed his axiom mission, having said that  we need to set in motion the process for the second batch of vyomonauts (with much emphasis on younger candidates)who would be a critical asset for BAS and mentors and instructors for our crewed lunar missions of the future. Sustainability of Vyomonaut program should be of the highest priority and recruitment of younger candidates would do just that

Decronym

The green stripe of the tricolor is disproportionately thin it's almost not visible at all. A strange design choice! It's almost like they didn't even want it to be there.

Inclusion of the explicit English readout of "India's First Astronauts" in that place is also very strange. Was such a readout really necessary on the patch itself? There are other ways it could have been conveyed with a numeral inside a box in the upper left corner and updated with each future mission. The wording could have appeared in a special label above the patch too for this first occasion.

It's only because of that readout I am sure, the saffron stripe had to take over almost half of the height of the three stripes, and for that reason the height of the green stripe had to be unfortunately sacrificed it appears.

Besides, the wording is kinda incorrect too. What about Rakesh Sharma!? He was the first Indian Astronaut! "First Human Space Mission" or "First Crewed Space Mission" preferably at the bottom of the patch would have been better. The fact that it is India's would have been signified in various other obvious ways, including the tricolor (with all stripes being equally wide like in our national flag), and the fact that there is an ISRO logo.

No offense to ISRO, I think they're unique in their own regard and that  they're aiming to implement cost effective space missions but their mission time scales are just too lackluster. We're so lagging behind.

The Gaganyaan mission, a critical milestone for India's space ambitions, has faced several challenges, including those posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, ISRO redirected resources, such as oxygen supplies, to aid India’s healthcare system, delaying the mission’s original 2022 target by years. Additional funding of approximately ₹111 billion (US $1.32 billion) has been allocated to support the mission’s enhanced requirements.

Unmanned missions G1 and G2 will rigorously test mission components, including crew and service modules, reentry capabilities, and splashdown recovery in the Bay of Bengal. These trials, vital for validating mission safety and reliability, will feature a humanoid robot, Vyomitra, in G1 to simulate human conditions in orbit.

# India’s Path to Join Elite Space League

With a successful crewed launch, India will join the United States, Russia, and China as the only nations to have independently sent humans to space. The upcoming H1 mission, targeting low Earth orbit at an altitude of approximately 400 km, aims to carry one to three astronauts for a three-day journey, showcasing India's prowess in human spaceflight capabilities.

Among the astronauts preparing for this historic mission are IAF Group Captains Prashant Balakrishnan Nair, Ajith Krishnan, and Subhanshu Shukla. Just the usual sort of optimistic timelines, I think, with the fine print saying "..IF everything goes EXACTLY as planned from now on." If they expect the first uncrewed flight "later this year", there is a good chance that it might get delayed to early next year. And it looks highly unlikely that they would be able to do another two additional uncrewed flights within a year, especially so if they identify issues with the spacecraft during the first flight. They can't take chances for a crewed spacecraft and rush things. Personally, I expect the first crewed flight to happen somewhere around 2029.
